![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Provenance is the Imperial Radch trilogy light. In fact, the character of the Geck ambassador more or less repeats Leckie’s trick from Ancillary Mercy – yet without anything coming close to the genius of the fish sauce. Provenance is set in the same universe as Leckie’s famous debut trilogy, but those of you craving more of the Rrrrrr or something like that hilarious & menacing Presger translator will be disappointed. I wrote ‘small’ part, because I wanted more. It needs repeating: all that is no mean feat, and Provenance is definitely not a bad book.Ī small part of the novel’s charm deals with the strangeness of aliens – but ultimately it’s just the same old trick as in Frank Herbert’s Whipping Star: having aliens speak garbled English. The pacing is okay, the prose too, and enough stuff happens to keep the reader’s interest fresh. As entertainment it works just fine: others have called it a comedy of manners, and Leckie has a distinctive, somewhat detached style which helps her create awkward social atmospheres seemingly effortlessly. I enjoyed reading Provenance, but after I put it down the question whether this really was a good book quickly took my enjoyment hostage. ![]() ![]() ![]() I did nudged the speed up to 1.1x just to ramp up the atmosphere slightly, the native 1.0x speed just felt a smidge passive and that slight speed increase just helped add a little more tension which I felt better suited the pace of the story. He suited the characters, has good cadence, inflections and intonations and it was easy to tell the characters apart. Narrator comment: Kai Rubio is a new narrator for me and I enjoyed his performance. It is part of a series so does end on a sort of a cliff-hanger. ![]() ![]() ![]() Once it got going the pace was good, the interaction between the characters was engaging (I really enjoy Christian's snarky personality) and the underlying story is intriguing as Christian tries to put the pieces of his old life together. Chrysalis was not at all what I expected, and is very different to what I thought it would be given the opening chapters. This book isn't a straight "guy wakes up with amnesia" story, there are sci-fi elements wrapped up in Chris's character's past. Story comment: Good pace, likeable characters, interesting plot I went into this one knowing nothing more than the brief Publishers Summary which in the grand scheme of the story gives away very little! I found the story a little slow to start, but once Chris's secrets started spilling out I got sucked right in. ![]() ![]() ![]() For the sake of her daughters, she decided that it was time for a woman in her position to speak out about the reality of life for women in her country, whatever their rank. Clashes erupted in Paris on Monday marking May 1, a traditional day of union-led marches, in the wake of hugely unpopular changes to Frances pension system that were signed into law last month. The chapters on Law and Order in the village, and 'The Parish' were particularly good, and the latter I especially enjoyed, and also liked the way that it made the subject seem far less complicated. Thankfully though, the book becomes a little more lively after the first 60 pages or so and the authors were back on form with thier informative and engaging historical narrative. ![]() As a history student I shoud be more used to dry academic writing, but this was not a textbook and I found the dry recounting of facts and figures rather off putting in work of popular history. The main reason was that the first part of the book seemed to me very dull, tedious and rather slow.
